New Board for NBC, VON and APCON posted by Awwalu Salihu on 03/09/2009

The Minister of Information and Communications, Prof Dora Akunyili has called on the Boards of parastatals to see their appointment as an opportunity to contribute to national development. She made this call while inaugurating the boards of three parastatals of the Ministry: the National Broadcasting Commission, Voice of Nigeria and the Advertising Council of Nigeria, on Tuesday July 28, 2009, at the Ministry’s Press Centre.

She urged the board not to meddle in the day-to-day running of the organisations, but be guided by the laid down procedure for the Boards of Parastatals  in the execution of their duties. Prof Akunyili called for a synergy of ideas between the Boards and the Chief Executives, to make their particular organisations and the country in general, better in the Seven-point Agenda and the re-branding project.
In their responses, the three Chairmen, on behalf of the members of their boards, thanked the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for giving them the opportunity to serve. They pledged support to the Seven-point Agenda of the government and promised to leave the organisations better than they met them.
On behalf of the Chief Executives of the Parastatals, the Director-General Voice of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Jijiwa, said they saw the appointment of the boards as part of the process of strengthening the organisations. He pledged their cooperation to their various boards.
The board members were presented their certificates of appointment and later posed with the Ministers in group photographs. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Mohammed Koro, Directors of the Ministry and the Parastatals, as well as the former Governor of Gombe State were among others who attended the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of the National Broadcasting Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Najume has assured the Management of the Commission that he would work with them to provide vibrant broadcast regulation without interfering in their day-to-day activities. 
He told members of the Commission’s Management, soon after the swearing-in ceremony, that the Board would only give directions to avoid any rough roads in the Commission’s Journey towards achieving its vision and mission.
Alhaji Ibrahim Najume was speaking at the maiden sitting of the Board during which members and the Commission’s management formally met each other.   The Board’s maiden meeting followed immediately after behind closed doors.
The Board Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Najume Musa hails from Katsina. He is a trained teacher, a businessman and a politician.
Other members of the Board include Chief Patrick Adaba, mni, former Deputy Governor of Kogi State; Hon Akhere Ugbesia, a Lawyer, a Businessman, a former Edo State legislator and an ex-broadcaster; and Hon Mike O. Mku, a former General Manager of the famous Benue Cement Company and a one-time Special Adviser to the C-in-C, is an industrialist from Benue State.
Otunba Adedoyin Olusegun Ogungbe from Ogun State is a former Commissioner, a Chief Executive Officer of several companies and a Fellow of the Nigerian Marketing Association bringing his wealth of experience to enrich the NBC Board. Engineer Yakubu A. Rasheed, the Chiroma of Dukku, in Gombe State is an expert in water resources and environment who has consulted on many water and housing projects for Gombe State and the Federal Government.
Honourable Ayorinde Ebenezer Oluwayomi from Ekiti is also a member of the NBC Board. A graduate of the famous Yaba Tech and holder of an Ado-Ekiti University MBA, Ayorinde is a former Councillor, a former Local Government Chairman, Ekiti State ALGON Chairman and a party South West Organising Sectretary.
 Alhaji Abdullahi Kuda, from Bauchi State was also sworn-in as a member of the NBC Board, however, Mr. Peter Nwaboshi from Delta State, was unable to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
