MTN NIGERIA SEEKS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NBC AHEAD OF THE DIGITAL SWITCHOVER.

By Ebuwa Maureen

MTN Nigeria has called for further partnership with the National Broadcasting Commission ahead of the forthcoming Digital Switch Over.

This request was made by the Human Resources Executive, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola, who led a delegation of MTN top executives on a courtesy visit to the NBC Headquarters in Abuja, Tuesday 22nd November 2016.

Welcoming the delegation to the Commission, the DG, NBC, Mall. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, stated that it was imperative for the Commission to meet with MTN because of the Abuja roll out of the DSO coming up in the middle of December, 2016, to evaluate the readiness of the MTN DTT services for the project.

Mall. Modibbo also told the delegation that plans were already in top gear for the roll out of the Abuja DSO where he reiterated that 30 DTT channels will be rolled out. He revealed that Pinnacle Communications Ltd, the signal distributor for the Abuja DSO, has already installed world class equipment and started test transmission for the process.

In her response, the head of the delegation, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola noted that they were delighted to be at the Commission, to update the DG on the progress so far made on the DTT converged TV services licence granted the company; to discuss their collective goal towards the roll out of the DTT services; and give their roll out plan regarding the extension of their services nationwide; as well as solicit the Commission’s support towards achieving a successful nationwide rollout. She emphasised that MTN was ready to work in conjunction with the NBC and other ecosystem partners for a successful DSO launch in Abuja.

In a presentation on the roll out plan of the MTN towards a successful DSO, the Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Mrs. Lynda St Nwafor, pointed out that MTN plans to launch full converged services on the National Set-Top-Box system, while relying on existing broadcast ecosystem partners approved and set up by the NBC for the actualization of the DSO.

She also added that MTN would strategically target a lower market segment with its roll out plan which will cover product, signal and content distribution strategies.

Mrs. Nwafor further explained that MTN would engage Set-Top-Box manufacturers for the required enhancements to drive additional services on Set-Top-Boxes as well as leverage on existing STB distributors and the MTN nationwide distribution network to ensure effective penetration of services nationwide. Adding that MTN was poised to deliver on its licence obligations for a commercial launch of PayTV converged services. She also added that MTN subscribers, who have the Set-Top-Box, will have access to some content provided by MTN and also be in the cities where the DSO project will be launched.

The DG, NBC, thanked the delegation for the visit while assuring them of the  Commission’s support and cooperation to the MTN and other stakeholders for the benefit of the industry and the viewing and listening public.
