OPENING REMARKS BY DIRECTOR GENERAL, NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMMISSION, MALL. IS’HAQ MODIBBO KAWU AT THE VALIDATION SEMINAR ON THE REVIEW OF THE NBC ACT HELD ON 30TH JULY 2018 AT CORINTHIA VILLA HOTEL, ABUJA.
I am very delighted to see the wonderful cast that is represented here today: Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON), Nigeria Guild of Editors, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Radio, and Television Theater Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) and National Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ).
For me, this is the most representative gathering of media people. We have a major stake in the way National Broadcasting Commission operates. I have concluded 2 years of 5 year tenure as the DG of NBC and from the very beginning, I knew that we needed to work on the NBC act.
Preliminary work has already been done on the NBC Act. From the perspective of the Commission itself, we were aware that we needed to strengthen the law for some simple reasons: In trying to issue a license, we do all the preliminary work but there are two critical levels that when we get to, it is totally out of the hand of NBC.
We need to keep working on the law and I hope in the long run, bodies like the Institute for Media and Society (IMS) and other stakeholders will begin to look at how we can assist our licensees because there is a lot of gap in knowledge and that influences and affect the way people operate.
This work we are doing is so vital and the Commission will take this process forward. The fact that if we have been able to put this seminar in place we will get this amendment done and get a very good Act that will be responsible for the Nigeria broadcasting industry.
Thank you very much.
